Bowker (Philip G.) Overpass opens.

October 31, 1966

It connects the Fenway and Storrow Drive. The bridge is named for the Brookline state senator who cast the deciding vote on the project, and who also chaired the Massachusetts legislature’s version of Un-American Activities Committee to investigate Communists or Communist sympathizers. The overpass runs over the Olmsted-designed Charlesgate and serves as an access ramp for cars to access Storrow Drive. Bainbridge Bunting later writes, “[It] desecrated one of the loveliest city parks in America.”
